Scented candle: how to choose the right one and make it last
A good scented candle is chosen as much as it is savored. Here is our advice, forged over more than forty years of artisanal manufacturing in Mane, in Haute-Provence, on how to choose your candle and enjoy it for as long as possible.
Choosing the right candle
The choice of a scented candle depends first of all on the room and the moment: a fresh and vegetal scent in the kitchen or bathroom, a more enveloping accord (vanilla, amber, wood) in the living room or bedroom in the evening. At Collines de Provence, each candle is hand-poured, one by one, in our workshops, with a cotton wick — without any metal — chosen to suit each fragrance.
The first burn, a key step
When lighting for the first time, let the candle burn until the wax has melted across the entire surface, from one edge to the other (generally allow 1 to 2 hours depending on the diameter). This step prevents the "tunnel" effect, which prevents the candle from burning properly afterward.
Our tips for a clean burn
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting.
- Do not let it burn for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
- Place the candle away from drafts, which cause the flame to smoke unnecessarily.
- Stop using it when about 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom of the container.
With an appropriate and well-maintained wick, the combustion remains clean, without smoke trails or soot deposits on the glass.
