Ribes nigrum
Blackcurrant, a small cluster of black berries, is the fruit of the blackcurrant tree, a shrub native to Europe. Cultivated in the west of France as well as in the Loire Valley from the 16th century, blackcurrant is eaten as a table fruit. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, its medicinal properties made it a sought-after remedy.
Blackcurrant has often been considered a magical fruit, especially in the Middle Ages when it was made into fortifying potions.
Anti-inflammatory, tonic and antibacterial, blackcurrant has many properties. It also helps fight against flu symptoms, fatigue and stress. Herbal medicine uses its berries, but also its leaves and buds.
