Since the 12th century, ebony has been considered one of the most precious woods in Europe. It was used in the production of small objects such as boxes, knife handles, chess sets, etc.
The ebony wood, Diospyros tessellaria, is a flowering plant species of the genus Diospyros (Ebony) and the family Ebenaceae. It is a tree that can reach up to twenty meters in height.
Most of the ebony wood exploited in France between the 18th and 20th centuries originated from Madagascar. African ebony trees, which grow to about the size of an oak, are found in tropical regions such as Benin, Cameroon, Guinea, Congo, Nigeria, etc.
