Patchouli was introduced to Europe in the early 19th century by traders from the East India Company, who played a crucial role in its dissemination to the West. Additionally, tonka beans were first mentioned in 1775. French scientist Jean-Baptiste Aublet, sent to Mauritius to establish a pharmacy and botanical garden, contributed to their discovery. Among the many plants he identified, he had planted a Brazilian teak in his herbarium, adding to his extensive collection.
Patchouli is a perennial tropical plant that can grow up to 1 meter in height. It belongs to the aromatic plants category and features tetrahedral stems.
The leaves of patchouli are velvety, broad, and odorless when fresh. The aromatic compounds only develop after a fermentation process. Its fruits are tiny black nutlets.
In contrast, tonka beans come from the tree known as the coumarou. These giant trees, which can reach up to 30 meters in height, grow in the Amazon rainforest. They require a warm tropical climate and highly fertile soil to thrive.

Native to Southeast Asia, patchouli is predominantly produced in Indonesia, China, southern India, and the Philippines. In contrast, tonka beans originate from the Caribbean and South America. They are harvested from Mexico to Brazil, with a notable concentration in Venezuela, French Guiana, and Brazil.
