Poppy flowers have been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to the 12th century BCE. In the 16th century, this plant was used for its properties, including pulverizing the flowers to make potions
The poppy is a common annual herbaceous plant, covered with bristly hairs, reaching up to 80 cm in height. Its leaves are hairy and divided. The flowers, red and velvety, have four elliptical petals with often a black spot at the base.
The poppy is believed to be native to the Eastern Mediterranean basin, including Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
